Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo has reportedly had his contract option picked up by the team for the 2020 season, but he’s in the news again Sunday night as he captured the National League’s Gold Glove Award at first base.

Rizzo, who won the prize in 2016 and shared it in 2018 with Atlanta’s Freddie Freeman, bested St. Louis first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and Arizona’s Christian Walker for the prize, which was revealed on Sunday night.

In 146 games at first base this season, Rizzo posted a .996 fielding percentage on 1,268 chances, making just five errors. He recorded 1,140 putouts and 123 assists in those chances. According to Baseball Reference, Rizzo was a plus-3 defensive runs saved player in the 2019 season at first base.

Rizzo is the first Cubs first baseman to capture three Gold Glove Awards since Mark Grace won on four different occasions during the 1990’s for the franchise. Derek Lee won a pair of awards in 2005 and 2007.

Rizzo’s teammate Jason Heyward did not win the Gold Glove Award in right field, losing out to Los Angeles’ Cody Bellinger.
