Bears Sign Former Northwestern Star Basanez

Team addresses quarterback needs, sort of

Bears GM Jerry Angelo has made no secret of his desire to "address" the Bears quarterback spot. That probably means Angelo is looking to sign a top free agent quarterback -- even if there aren't any "top" free agents available -- or acquire one through a trade, or, if necessary, draft one, though the Bears' low draft position would seem to negate that possibility. (QB is an overrated position in the draft, and it's hard to get good players in the low part of the first round; at least, it's hard to guess well enough to pluck them. But we digress.)

Today, the Bears signed former Northwestern star quarterback Brett Basanez. Exciting! If this is what counts as "addressing" the position, well, it's a start, but we imagine the Angelo and the Bears aren't quite done yet.

In fact, Bears fans worried that this is Angelo's solution -- and we doubt many of them exist -- will be sated by this portion in the Bears' online "story," which is really just a slightly disguised PR release, which says:

"Basanez’s arrival won’t stop the Bears from continuing to look to bolster thequarterback position possibly in the draft and/or free agency, a priority that general manager Jerry Angelo discussed shortly after the end of the 2008 season."

Good to know. Brett Basanez is a nice local kid, and we're sure he'll make a great third-string or practice team quarterback, but short of a Kurt Warner-esque miracle, he is most certainly not the Bears future.
