Bears Reportedly Set to Interview Adam Gase for OC Job

Gase interviewed with McCaskey, Phillips for head coaching job earlier this month

On Tuesday the Chicago Bears hired a new defensive coordinator as Vic Fangio joined John Fox’s staff, and it appears that the team isn’t wasting any time to address their needs on the offensive side of the ball.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Bears are interviewing former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase for the same job in the Windy City. Gase was originally a contender for several positions, including the head coaching job in San Francisco, but he’s been left by the side of the road as gig after gig has gone to other candidates.

Gase interviewed with the Bears shortly after their head coaching vacancy opened, but new G.M. Ryan Pace did not bring him in for a second interview after he spoke to team president Ted Phillips and owner George McCaskey.

On Tuesday alone, there were two jobs that Gase was considered a potential fit for that went to other coaches. The Baltimore Ravens opted to hire former Bears head coach Marc Trestman as their offensive coordinator, replacing Gary Kubiak, and the Jacksonville Jaguars reportedly hired Greg Olson to lead their offense.

Gase was Fox's offensive coordinator in Denver, and he was the quarterback coach for the team when former coordinator (and current San Diego Chargers head coach) Mike McCoy was there.

Even though Rapoport says that the Bears could close things with Gase quickly, there are still other candidates that are still on the team’s radar. Former New England Patriots offensive coordinator (and former University of Notre Dame head coach) Charlie Weis is one of them, and current Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter has also been mentioned as a potential candidate for the Bears’ job.

Indianapolis Colts special assistant coach Rob Chudzinski has also been mentioned, and the Bears reportedly asked the Colts for permission to interview him.
