Bears Bites: Chicago Signs WR Edwards, Spurlock to Deals

Lance Briggs calls defense a "work in progress" during OTA's

In this edition of Bears Bites, we take a look at a couple of stories coming out of the Chicago Bears’ offseason training workouts at Halas Hall, including two new receivers in the mix for roster spots and what Lance Briggs had to say about the team’s new-look defense.

-We start out with the news that the Bears inked Armanti Edwards and Micheal Spurlock to contracts on Tuesday afternoon, while releasing injured receiver Domenik Hixon with an injury settlement. The two players could potentially make the 53-man roster out of training camp, but they would have a tough time getting on the field much with guys like Marquees Wilson standing in the way. -We missed this story late last week, but Dan Durkin wrote up an interesting explanation of the Bears’ strategy known as “switched verticals.” [CBS Chicago]

-In case you didn’t know, Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall are a really good receiving tandem, and Jeffery is really happy with that situation. [Chicago Sun-Times]

-Lance Briggs wasn’t happy with the way the team played defense last season (and why should he be, with the team surrendering 478 points?), and with the team rebuilding their defense under Mel Tucker, Briggs says that it’s still a work in progress. [Daily Herald]

-Finally, defensive tackle Nate Collins is making his way back from a torn ACL that ended his 2013 season, and with several new tackles in the fold, he’s looking to hold down his spot and maybe even take on a bigger role in 2014. [ESPN Chicago]
