Regin Recalled from Rockford to Replace Sharp in Lineup

The Chicago Blackhawks were down to 11 healthy forwards after Patrick Sharp sustained a lower body injury on Tuesday night against the Montreal Canadiens, and they addressed that shortcoming Thursday as they recalled Peter Regin from the Rockford IceHogs.

Regin has had an interesting year so far, being placed on waivers just before the campaign began in order to make room for the Blackhawks to carry Daniel Carcillo after he was signed just before the season. Regin was sent down to Rockford when he cleared waivers, and he’s played well for the Blackhawks’ AHL affiliate, scoring four goals and dishing out six assists in 11 games.

It’s not clear just yet which line Regin will be joining up (although a run on the third line with Bryan Bickell and Andrew Shaw could be an interesting combination if Joel Quenneville chooses to go in that direction). It’s unlikely that he will be a direct replacement for Sharp in the top six forwards, with guys like Kris Versteeg, Brandon Saad, and Bickell all potentially getting a shot.

During Thursday's practice at the United Center, Regin skated on the fourth line with Jeremy Morin and Brad Richards. Ben Smith remained on the top line with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, and the new second line featured Saad taking Sharp's place with Shaw and Marian Hossa on the second line.
