Cubs Trade Marmol for Dodgers' Guerrier

The Carlos Marmol Era is officially over as the Chicago Cubs traded the one-time closer to the Los Angeles Dodgers for right-handed pitcher Matt Guerrier. Marmol was designated for assignment last week after a terrible start to his season in Chicago.

Guerrier, who will turn 35 in August, is expected to help pitch in for middle relief. He's appeared in 32 games for the Dodgers this season with an ERA of 4.80. Like Marmol, his best season was in 2009. The Dodgers signed him to a three-year, $12 million deal after that.

Basically, the Cubs traded an ineffective pitcher for a slightly less ineffective pitcher. The good news is he is officially gone, and the Cubs got something in return. Perhaps Guerrier can find a new life in Chicago, but 35-year-old middle relievers aren't often marked for a career resurgence.

It's part of the Cubs' fire sale that also saw them trade Scott Feldman and a minor leaguer to the Baltimore Orioles.  It's only July 2, and the white flag that we all knew was going to wave on this season finally hit full-mast.
