With Chicago Cubs co-owner Laura Ricketts as its new board chair, the nation's only lesbian-packed political action committee on Thursday threw its support behind 15 Democratic candidates.
Gov. Pat Quinn is among the candidates endorsed by LPAC. Others gubernatorial candidates supported by the group include Wendy Davis of Texas, Heather Mizeur of Maryland, Martha Coakley of Massachusetts, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire and Michael Michaud of Maine. Others are candidates for congressional seats and state offices such as lieutenant governor, secretary of state and attorney general.
The group's goal, according to its TeamLPAC.com website, is to help elect "pro-lesbian, pro-women candidates."
But that doesn't necessarily mean Democrats, Ricketts told the Washington Post.
"I would love it if we could endorse Republican candidates as well," she said. "Our intention is to be bi-partisan."
The group said it's raised $1.2 million since it began in 2011. Ricketts hopes to add another one million dollars this year.
As well as serving as the Cub's director and part owner, the 46-year-old Ricketts is also Chairman of the Board of Chicago Cubs Charities. She's the the first openly gay woman to own an MLB franchise and is co-chair of the Democratic National Committee's LGBT Leadership Council and the National Leadership Counsel for Lambda Legal.
