Kirk and Durbin to Sit Together at State of the Union

What's next? Dogs friending cats?

Though members of Congress in different political parties are typically relegated to opposite sides of the aisle during the State of the Union address, Illinois' senators will be seated a bit differently this year, according to a Durbin aide.

Durbin, a Democrat, and Senator Mark Kirk, a Republican, will sit next to one another for the duration of President Obama's upcoming  State of the Union speech on Tuesday.

"Traditions that divide us were meant to be broken," said Durbin.

This decision comes as a timely response to calls for cooperation and a more temperate political environment in the wake of the tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona, just 11 days ago.
