Attorneys representing Jesse Jackson Jr., who resigned Wednesday from the U.S. Congress, said the former lawmaker is cooperating with the federal investigation but said negotiations for a "fair resolution" could take several months.
The statement came from Reid H. Weingarten and Brian M. Heberlig, partners in the Washington, D.C. office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, and Dan K. Webb, partner in the Chicago office of Winston & Strawn
They said no further comment would be forthcoming and urged members of the public and the media "to give Mr. Jackson the privacy he needs to heal and handle these issues responsibly."
In his resignation letter, Jackson acknowledged the federal investigation into his finances.
"During this journey I have made my share of mistakes," he wrote. "I am aware of the ongoing federal investigation into my activities and I am doing my best to address the situation responsibly, cooperate with the investigators, and accept the responsibility for my mistakes for they are my mistakes and mine alone."
