Floor of Thompson Center Treated for Bed Bugs

Illinois Department of Revenue spokeswoman said infected area was one where only state employees are allowed

A floor of the James R. Thompson Center in downtown Chicago has been treated for bed bugs.

Illinois Department of Revenue spokeswoman Sue Hofer said Wednesday the bugs were found in seven cubicles last week. The offices used by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation were treated over the weekend.

She said the infected area was one where only state employees are allowed. The bugs, which don't carry disease but do spread easily, were traced to an employee who had a home infestation, Hofer said.

Employees were notified and instructed on how to prevent the spread.

The Thompson Center is where Gov. Pat Quinn and state constitutional officers have offices.

Chicago for two consecutive years has been ranked No. 1 in the number of service calls to treat bed bug infestations.
