WATCH LIVE: Former U.S. Defense Officials Talk Security vs. Privacy

Tommy Vietor, the University of Chicago Institute of Politics Visiting Fellow and former National Security Council Spokesman for the Obama administration, will join his colleague and former Pentagon Press Secretary George Little for an inside look at national security communications from “behind the podium.”

In a conversation moderated by Robert Pape, Co-Director of the Program on International Security Policy at the University of Chicago, Vietor and Little will explore the inherent tension between the public’s right to know and the crucially covert nature of national security operations, drawing on their first-hand experiences with the U.S. military raid on Osama bin Laden, the Iranian nuclear negotiations, and the NSA surveillance programs.

The two former spokesman will take their audience behind the scenes as these events unfolded, offering an inside look at the deliberations over which details could and should be revealed to the American public. Join us for a frank and wide-ranging discussion on the paradox of communicating our nation’s deepest secrets.
