State Senator Will Need Surgery for Softball Injury

Sen. Matt Murphy injured in annual game between the Illinois House and Senate

An Illinois State Senator says her colleague will need surgery for a knee injury sustained in the annual softball game between the Illinois House and Senate.

Sen. Matt Murphy (R-Palatine) was hit in the left leg by a ball during the fifth inning on Wednesday. The game at Springfield's Lincoln Park was temporarily halted as lawmakers crowded around him, helped ice his leg and talked with him.

He was taken away from the game in an ambulance as lawmakers cheered. He responded with a peace sign from the stretcher.

Sen. Pamela Althoff (R-Crystal Lake) said Thursday the injury will require surgery.

The annual softball game is a lawmaker tradition. The House beat the Senate 12-5.
