Triple Play: New Olympic Sports

While some sports are Olympic staples, a few newbies are regularly added to the program.

Rugby (2016): Rugby has had an on-again, off-again relationship with the Olympic program. It's been an official Olympic sport on four different occasions—1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924. In 2009, the IOC voted to bring Rugby-7 back to the Olympic program and it will rejoin the list of official Olympic sports at the 2016 games in Rio.

BMX (2008): Bicycle motocross started in the 1960s and quickly gained popularity in the U.S. and throughout the world. Although the International BMX Federation was founded in 1981, BMX didn't make its way onto the Olympic program until 2008 in Beijing. Latvia's Maris Strombergs and France's Anne-Caroline Chausson were the first gold medalists in BMX cycling.

Trampoline (2000): The trampoline was invented in 1934 to train astronauts as well as divers and skiiers. It was so much fun it gained popularity as a sport of its own. Trampolining became its own Olympic sport at the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics. Russian gymnast Alexander Moskalenko was the first male to win gold in trampoline in 2000, and he also took home silver in Athens in 2004.
