Thousands of inmates who committed their crimes as juveniles could have their mandatory life sentences reduced, NBC News reported.

But that would depend on the outcome of a U.S. Supreme Court case that is under review on Tuesday.

The court ruled three years ago that mandatory life sentences for juvenile offenders in murder cases were unconstitutional and that they violated the ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

The ruling barred future mandatory life sentences without parole for juveniles. The court will consider whether that rule applies to juveniles sentenced before its 2012 ruling.
