Police: Ohio Man Mistakes Teen Son for Intruder, Kills Him

Police say the man thought his son had caught the bus for school Tuesday morning, but the teen returned home soon afterward

A Cincinnati man fatally shot his 14-year-old son after mistaking him to be a home intruder, according to police.

The father had just dropped his son off at the school bus stop Tuesday morning when he heard a noise in the basement of their home, police said. The boy, who has been identified as Georta Mack, had returned home around 6:30 a.m. without his father’s knowledge, Cincinnati.com reports.

After retrieving a handgun for protection, the father went to check on the noise, according to police. When he opened the door to the basement the man became startled and accidentally fired the gun, hitting the boy in the neck, police said.

Authorities say the father called 911 and the boy was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, where he died soon after.

Police Lt. Steve Saunders says the father is being interviewed by police and has been cooperative.
