Gingrich Banking on Mississippi, Alabama to Stay Alive

While Newt Gingrich's win in Georgia Tuesday night kept his campaign from sinking, he'll need big nights in Alabama and Mississippi next week to keep it afloat, NBC's First Read Blog reported. Despite being second to Mitt Romney in the official delegate count (Romney is at 339, Gingrich 111 and Santorum 107, according to NBC News) Gingrich has won only two states — a point his rivals have underscored. The southern states are so vital to the former House speaker's campaign he's skipping scheduled trips to Kansas, where GOPers cast their ballots March 10, in favor of extra time in Alabama and Mississippi. Those states host primaries March 13.
