”King's Speech” Topples “The Social Network” in Producer's Guild Awards

The race for the Oscar gets tighter.

Long live the "King's Speech," say the Producer's Guild of America.

The Weinstein Company's box-office hit won its first best picture trophy of the season Saturday night at the trade non-profit's awards ceremony, giving it a competitive edge in  in the upcoming Academy Awards.

"The King's Speech" producers Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Gareth Unwin told Reuters they thought they were "the last guys in the running" for the 10 nominees of the Producer's award. Clearly, they were proven wrong.

The drama starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter lost the top movie award at the Golden Globes to Facebook flick "The Social Network," which has had its fair share of Oscar buzz.

But the PGA has acurately predicted the Academu's best picture picks in the past, pushing "The King's Speech" to also be a likely winner of the golden statue.

"King's Speech" didn't go empty handed after the Golden Globes -- Colin Firth won best actor.

Other nominees for best-produced movie of the year included "Black Swan, "The Fighter," and "The Social Network." "Toy Story 3," came in first for best-produced animated film. Matthew Weiner snagged a prize for his writing for AMC's "Mad Men" and Producer Steve Levitan won for "Outstanding Producer" for ABC's "Modern Family."
