Syrian Rebels Claim to Have Downed Military Helicopter

Video reportedly shot inside the Syrian city of Idlib Wednesday appears to show a Syrian military helicopter falling from the sky and exploding into flames—the result of an attack from well-armed, increasingly coordinated opposition forces, Reuters reported. Rami Abdelrahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told Reuters Wednesday that "some rebels say they used anti-aircraft missiles," while French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told reporters that the rebels' acquisition of heavy weapons have forced the Syrian military to carry out air strikes from heavy altitudes. The video, heavily circulated Wednesday, comes a day after rebels reportedly agreed to recognize a joint leadership in an effort to convince foreign governments to provide them with weapons support. One rebel source told Reuters that an agreement "has been reached" and just needed to be signed. Foreign supporters have been encouraging the rebels to "'sort yourself out and unite, we need a clear and credible side to provide it with quality weapons,'" the source said.
