A man claiming to be Col. Moammar Khaddafy’s son Seif al-Islam vowed Wednesday never to surrender, even as rebels said they believed they'd cornered the Libyan strongman. In a statement broadcast on Al-Rai TV station, Seif al-Islam said that he was speaking from the suburbs outside Tripoli and assured that his father was fine. He pledged to “liberate” the capital, where throngs of Libyans had congregated hours earlier to celebrate the end of Ramadan and Khaddafy’s regime. Another Khaddafy son, Al-Saadi, offered in a separate statement Wednesday to mediate talks with rebels “based on ending bloodshed.” Rebels have set a Saturday deadline for Khaddafy’s family and loyalists to stop fighting without conditions, The New York Times reported. Abdul Hafith Ghoga, a Transitional National Council official, told the Times he believed Col. Khaddafy was holed up in the desert town of Bani Walid, 150 miles from Tripoli. “We are waiting to give him a chance to surrender,” he said.
