Two black-and-white kittens in Britain were found colored with permanent marker – one green and one blue – according to the animal rescue that's taking care of them.

The kittens are being called Shrek and Smurf by the Bradford Cat Watch Rescue, which received them from police, the rescue wrote on its website on Tuesday.

"This is a dreadful act of cruelty and who knows what untelling damage this may have caused," the rescue's post reads. The BBC attributed the write-up to Katie Jane Lloyd.

Police responding to an animal welfare case came across the kittens, whose white fur has been colored in with ink, according to the rescue, which didn't say when the animals were picked up. They are thought to be about four weeks old.

Smurf and Shrek are doing well after being fed and thoroughly washed, according to the Bradford Cat Watch Rescue, which posted pictures of the colorful cats. However, traces of the ink remained on the kittens' faces after about 36 hours, according to one of the photos.
