Was Katy Perry the one that got away?
In a moment of unguarded frankness, John Mayer shares his feelings about his breakup with the "Firework" singer after the on-and-off couple decided to go their separate ways last month--their second split in less than a year.
The 35-year-old Mayer stopped by Ellen DeGeneres' show for an interview airing Tuesday, and the crooner didn't shy away when the host asked him how he was doing, post-breakup.
"I just want to say, I love you and my thoughts are with you," DeGeneres told Mayer, recalling that she last she saw him at the Grammys with Perry, when they were seated a row ahead of DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi.
"It was a very private relationship going in," Mayer explains about his romance with Perry.
"It was a private relationship during, and it's a private relationship still," he adds. "I can understand asking the question based on some previous answers I have given, but I have finally learned how to put the wall between one thing and the other."

Mayer says he's "been much happier since then," noting, "I'm on the same journey as everyone else. Coupling is a tricky thing."
At the very least, Mayer's got his music to keep him busy these days: After being forced to go on a 10-month hiatus due to a vocal-cord ailment, the singer is now prepping for his first tour in three years, which officially kicks off on July 6 in Milwaukee.
