Warriors Improve to 72-9, Tie NBA Record for Most Regular Season Wins

The Warriors moved their record to 72-9, tying the wins total of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, whose 72-10 mark stands as the best in NBA history

The Streak is dead and the quest for 73 wins lives on.

The Warriors shook off the effects of being on the second night of a back-to-back set and outlasted the Spurs 92-86 Sunday night at AT&T Center, snapping a 33-game losing streak in San Antonio.

The Warriors moved their record to 72-9, tying the wins total of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, whose 72-10 mark stands as the best in NBA history.

The Warriors can break the record Wednesday night, when they close the regular season at home against Memphis.

Stephen Curry scored 37 points – 26 in the second half – to lead all scorers and send the sellout crowd streaming toward the exits in the final minutes. Klay Thompson scored 14 points and Draymond Green added 11.

After shooting only 35.1 percent in the first half, during which they scored a season-low 35 points, the Warriors came back to shoot 52.5 percent after intermission. They held San Antonio (65-15) to 37.8 percent from the field.

The Warriors won in San Antonio for the first time since Feb. 14, 1997.

STANDOUT PERFORMER:

Green’s effort held the Warriors together early, and Curry’s marvelous second half finished off the Spurs.

Curry’s line: 37 points (13-of-22 shooting, 4-of-9 from 3-point distance), five assists, five rebounds and two steals. He was plus-7 for the game.

Green’s line: 11 points (4-of-5, 1-of-2), four assists, four rebounds and a blocked shot. He was plus-8.

TURNING POINT:

After the Spurs closed within one (70-69) on a dunk by backup center Boban Marjanovic with 8:41 remaining, the Warriors responded with a 14-3 run to go up 84-73 with 4:25 left.

San Antonio got no closer than four (inside the final minute) but never again posed a serious threat.

INJURY UPDATE:

Warriors: G Leandro Barbosa (rest) and F Kevon Looney (R hip inflammation) were listed as out.

Spurs: C/F Tim Duncan (rest) and F Boris Diaw (R adductor soreness) were listed as out.

WHAT’S NEXT:

The Warriors returned to Oakland immediately after the game. They return to action Wednesday, when the play host to the Memphis Grizzlies in the season finale.
