Girl Dies on Plane at LAX, Officials Say

The Delta plane was bound for Seattle when it turned back to LAX

A child died of cardiac arrest at Los Angeles International Airport Thursday on a plane that returned to the airport when the medical emergency was reported shortly after takeoff, officials said.

Paramedics responded to provide medical aid for a girl at LAX but "all efforts were futile and the child was beyond medical help," the Los Angeles Fire Department said in an alert.

The child died at the scene, the LAFD said. Airport officials said the girl died on the plane.

Delta Airlines released the following statement:

"Delta flight 2423 from Los Angeles to Seattle returned to Los Angeles International Airport shortly after takeoff due to a medical emergency onboard. The flight was met by paramedics. Delta is working to reaccomodate customers to their final destination."

The Los Angeles Police Department was handling the death investigation, the fire department said.
