Hundreds of fast-food workers across New York City walked off their jobs Monday as they launched a week of planned rallies to demand better pay and the right to unionize.
Walkouts and demonstrations were being held on Monday at restaurants including McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's locations around the city. Fast-food workers in half a dozen other major cities, including Chicago, St. Louis and Detroit, are expected to hold similar rallies through the end of the week.
Workers are demanding a minimum wage increase from $7.25 to $15 an hour. They're also calling for better benefits.
At a McDonald's across from Yankee Stadium, several dozen people chanted "We can't survive on "$7.25."
