Engelbert Humperdinck Wants to Be Your Next “Idol” Judge

Simon Cowell's departure from "American Idol" has left a showbiz hole that Engelbert Humperdinck wants to fill. Yes, that's right, Engelbert Humperdinck.

The 74-year-old King of Romance and crooner of such hits as "After the Lovin' "  is even working the PR machine flaunting a killer tan and a 44-year showbiz career as reasons he should sit in the hot seat. Forget for a moment that the average Fox viewer of the show has no earthly idea of who he is except for a very eccentric name.

His agent Vicki Roberts told PR Wire that Humperdinck's intimate knowledge of staging music shows is a big leg up on the competition. This wouldn't be his first rodeo. "That, along with his legendary status, is why he is the perfect candidate for the position of judge on 'American Idol,' " she noted.

Her colleague Arthur Andelson pointed to the "flexibility of his schedule" (not always a good sign for performers) as a big reason. "I can think of no better music legend to step into the position of judge and lend his expertise to the "American Idol" phenomenon," Andelson stated.

Other names who have been tossed out for the vacated judge's role include Howard Stern, Elton John and Madonna. Humperdinck, who threw out the perfectly normal name of Arnold George Dorsey early in his career, is a longshot at best. That is unless the Facebook crowd gets ahold of the mother of all campaigns.
