Retired Astronaut Scott Kelly Questions Trump's ‘Space Force' Proposal

"My big concern here is that, you know, space has been a place for us to work in a peaceful manner," Scott Kelly said

Retired NASA astronaut Scott Kelly is struggling to understand the purpose of President Donald Trump's "Space Force" plan, the former International Space Station commander said Friday.

Kelly blasted Trump’s proposed space military branch during an interview on MSNBC, telling Stephanie Ruhle and Ali Velshi that he saw the president's interplanetary scheme as little more than a waste of money that could jeopardize peaceful space exploration.

"It's not clear to me what the purpose is of this new branch of the military, which is going to be incredibly expensive," Kelly said Friday. "And my big concern here is that, you know, space has been a place for us to work in a peaceful manner. And, you know, changing that with not any clear reason at this point is, like I said, kind of hard to understand."

Kelly, a U.S. Navy veteran, added that the envisioned force’s goals would likely be redundant with space objectives already being worked toward by other military branches.
