Alec Baldwin Drops “Rock of Ages”

Maybe it's just a coincidence, maybe Alec Baldwin suffers from buyer's remorse, maybe a gypsy told him to avoid anything with "Rock" in the title - whatever the reason, Baldwin is pulling the plug on his role in the upcoming "Rock of Ages."

A few weeks after getitng into hot water by declaring - and then retracting - that he was leaving "30 Rock" after next season, Baldwin has now apparantly asked to be released from his commitment to appear in "Rock of Ages" - the Adam Shankman-directed adaptation of the Broadway musical, according to Deadline.

Casting an odd shadow over the annoucement - reports say that Baldwin hasn't exactly quit, but has asked that he be replaced "if at all possible" - is a statement from New Line president Toby Emmerich, who asserts that Baldwin is leaving because of a medical condition.

Baldwin has not commented on his medical status, and remains attached to Woody Allen's next movie, which is scheduled to shoot in Rome.

"Rock of Ages" boasts, even without Baldwin, a pretty hefty cast list. Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Malin Akerman, Mary J. Blige, and Bryan Cranston.
