Mom Jogging With Baby Fights Off Attacker With Bike Pump

The mom and baby were on the Hudson River Greenway near 190th Street

A woman jogging in a Manhattan park with her baby Friday fought off an attacker by bashing him in the head with a bike pump.

Mary Jane Jarman, 33, told NBC 4 New York she was pushing her 8-month-old son in a stroller along the Hudson River Greenway near 190th Street at about 9:30 a.m. when a man jumped out from behind a barrier and flashed a broken bottle, saying "come here, come here."

She tried to run from him but he grabbed her in a bear hug and knocked her down as she screamed.

Jarman said the man, dressed in a long-sleeve blue thermal shirt and jeans, apologized and told her "I'm sick, I'm sick" as he attacked.

She said she started hitting him in the head with a bike pump that she had with her.

"I just thought, 'Get his head, get his head,'" she said.

Eventually he let go of her and fled.

Jarman says her iPhone was on top of her stroller and he didn't attempt to take it.

"His sole purpose was to hurt me," she said. "It was frightening."

Jarman is concerned that the suspect is still on the loose, and doesn't plan to run on that path any longer.
