University of Florida Student Government Leader Faces Impeachment Over Visit by Donald Trump Jr.

What to Know

  • According to emails to the national finance consultant for the Trump 2020 campaign, Murphy agreed to pay the guests $50,000.

As President Trump faces the possibility of impeachments, his son is at the center of a similar situation at a Florida school.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that members of the student senate at the University of Florida have begun an impeachment inquiry into the student government president at the school, Michael Murphy. A formal resolution was delivered to Murphy as well as the senate president.

Allegations from those pushing for impeachment say that Murphy, who is the child of a Republican lobbyist who gave contributions to the Trump campaign in 2016, conspired with an official from the re-election campaign to bring both Donald Trump Jr. and his girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, to campus for an event on Oct. 10.

According to emails to the national finance consultant for the Trump 2020 campaign, Murphy agreed to pay the guests $50,000 using student activity fees – despite a law saying that public funds cannot be used to support political campaigns.

Students pay around $17 per credit hour to the student activity fee. Neither Murphy nor the senate president, Emily Dunson, responded to the paper’s request for a comment.
