Israeli Strike in Gaza Kills Pregnant Palestinian Woman, Child

An Israeli air strike targeting weapons sites in the Gaza Strip on Sunday killed a pregnant Palestinian woman and her daughter while they were asleep in their home, NBC News reported.

The strikes came in response to rockets launched from Gaza into Israel and amid escalating violence that has seen at least four Israelis and 22 Palestinians killed in the last 12 days.

Later Sunday, Israeli authorities said that a Palestinian woman detonated an explosive after getting pulled over at a West Bank checkpoint, injuring both herself and the police officer who stopped her.

Tensions have been brewing for weeks over the fate of the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem's Old City. Palestinians fear that Israel may change the status quo for the holy site — revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike — though Israel has maintained that it has no intention to do so.
