A teenage boy stabbed a girl in front of their shocked Oklahoma school during a welcome assembly on the first day of class Thursday, NBC News reported.

The teen, 14, was silent during the attack and did not appear to know the victim, also 14, Luther Police Chief David Randall. He added that the suspect appeared to have a "nonchalant attitude about what transpired" and hadn't told investigators why he did it.

The girl was in stable condition after surgery, Randall said.

Luther is a small town northeast of Oklahoma City. The stabbing comes amid a national conversation about toxic masculinity and the #MeToo movement.
