Helicopter Crashes Near Lantana Airport, 1 Dead, 1 Injured

One person is dead and another is critically injured after a helicopter crashed Monday morning near Lantana Airport in Palm Beach County.

The crash happened just north of the airport around 10:30 a.m., according to NBC affiliate WPTV. Officials say the chopper crashed to the ground just over the perimeter fence into John Prince Park.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the downed helicopter was a Robinson R22.

Jerry Campbell was walking in the park when he saw it fly above. Seconds later, he heard a crash.

"I just thought it was weird, I heard the noise, the trees, and thought about it for a couple of seconds, then thought 'Probably not,'" Campbell recalled. "Then I thought, 'There is nothing around these trees that could make that noise.'"

The survivor in the crash was transported to a nearby hospital, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
