Former New Jersey Prosecutor Admits Smuggling Marijuana Into Jail

A New Jersey lawyer has pleaded guilty to smuggling marijuana and tobacco into a jail.

Sixty-seven-year-old Brian Kapalin, a former Essex County assistant prosecutor, pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiring to smuggle contraband into a federal detention facility.

He admitted to taking packages to inmates awaiting federal trial at the Essex County Jail from September 2013 to May 2014.

For each one, he was paid $500, he admitted.

Sentencing is scheduled for March 18 and he could be sent to prison for up to five years.

Another man had already pleaded guilty to paying Kapalin to smuggle the contraband. An inmate has been charged, too.
