181,000 Drones Have Been Registered Under New Rules: FAA

A database launched more than two weeks ago by the Federal Aviation Administration has 181,000 registered drones, NBC News reported.

That’s a fraction of the 700,000 drones officials expected to be sold during the recent Christmas season.

The FAA said it’s working with the private sector to make registration easier — including new smartphone apps that could allow manufacturers to register a drone automatically by scanning a code on the aircraft.

The registry was unveiled on Dec. 14 for recreational drone users. People who purchased drones before Dec. 21 have until Feb. 19 to register.
