Amazon Files Lawsuit Against More Than 1,000 People for Fake Reviews

Online retailer Amazon filed a lawsuit Friday against against more than 1,000 people who offered to write for pay fake reviews of products featured on the e-commerce site, NBC News reported.

The suit is directed at users of Fiverr.com, an online marketplace where users can take on “gigs” such as logo designing or press release writing for $5.

The complaint asserts that the small number of fake reviews can “undermine the trust” that consumers and sellers place in Amazon. It also “tarnishes Amazon’s brand.”

A complication in the suit is the fact that the users operated anonymously via different usernames and IP addresses.

Fiverr has not commented on whether they would help Amazon uncover the users’ identities. However, a spokesperson told NBC News that they “actively remove services that violate our terms of use, and respond promptly to any reports of inappropriate content.”
