Where to Go: 2016 Chicago Museum Week

For eleven days this month, Chicagoans can enjoy free or discounted admission to some of the city’s most edifying cultural attractions. Here are some of the deals you won't want to miss.

Explore stars, diamond planets and black holes at America's first planetarium. From Oct. 13-23, Illinois residents can take advantage of 25 percent off any admission package. The Planetarium will also host several special museum week events, including a Zoom-In workshop where guests can program a rover and the opportunity to meet scientists and astronomers.
Throughout Museum Week, all Illinois residents receive $2 off the Art Institute's admission rate, with free admission available on Oct. 13 and Oct. 20 from 5-8 p.m. The museum will feature conversations with prominent artists Richard Nonas and Glenn Ligon, as well as an After Dark event on Oct. 14.

The Chicago History Museum will offer 25 percent off admission Monday through Friday and 10 percent off admission on Saturday and Sunday during Museum Week. Museum memberships will also be available at a 20 percent discount throughout the week. The museum will feature the opportunity for guests to explore exhibitions after hours with Museum curators and staff along with other specially tailored tours including a "Crossroads of America" and city history tours.

Explore 4.6 billion years of history at The Field Museum, home of the largest T. rex ever found and China's famed Terracotta Warriors. The museum offers $2 off admission for Illinois Residents throughout Museum Week and $3 admission for visitors with EBT or WIC identification.
Join the Lincoln Park Zoo for the annual Fall Fest -- a unique harvest celebration in the heart of the city. The Zoo will offer an exclusive Fall Fest Package for Museum Week guests at 20 percent off the regular price of $94. The package includes redeemable coupons for fest attractions such as train and carousel rides and face caricature drawings. Free activities for visitors during the festival include animal talks, edible garden seminars and pumpkin carving.

The Museum of Contemporary Art features the latest modern art from Chicago and around the world. Join the museum during Museum Week for $9 adult admission and free admission for Illinois residents on Oct. 18. Museum events during the week will include a Farmers Market and free programming from Chicago artists on Oct. 18.

The Museum of Science and Industry features 14-acres of interactive exhibits, including a 40-foot indoor tornado, the chance to explore a real World War II submarine and a mirror maze. Join the museum from Oct. 13 through Oct. 21 for 20 percent off museum entry for adults and children. Special Museum Week events include a science works career fair and and After Hours event exploring some of the Museum's quirkiest artifacts.

Visit the National Museum of Mexican Art during Museum week to be immersed in the richness of Mexican arts and culture, including the largest exhibit of Dia de los Muertos in the country. The museum offers a 15 percent discount at the museum gift shop for Illinois residents and a chance to win a Maiz Household membership. Special events put on by the museum includes a Folk Art workshop and festival on Oct. 14.
Join Chicago's oldest museum during Museum Week for 20 percent off adult admission for Illinois residents and a chance to win a lifetime membership. The museum will also offer 10 percent off the entire gift shop and discounted 1-year and 2-year family memberships. Special events during Museum Week include a Citizen Science Fair on Oct. 15 and an interactive climate change exhibit.
Shedd Aquarium
Visitors can take advantage of $8 off adult admission and $6 off child admission at the Aquarium from Oct. 13-23. Daily animal chats are included with admission rates, including talks about sharks, belugas and sea lions and penguins.

The DuSable Museum will offer up to 50 percent off admission during Museum Week, along with the opportunity to purchase a Family Membership at half price. The Museum will also offer special guided tours and a DuSable gift basket giveaway.
The Humboldt Park National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture will continue to offer free admission during Museum Week.
