Worker Injured in Explosion at St. Charles Powder Coating Company

At least one person was injured in an explosion at a powder coating company in St. Charles, officials said.

Officials responded to a fire alarm around 10:30 a.m. at Midwest Powder Coating Company in the 3800 block of Swenson Avenue where they were notified of an explosion, fire officials said.

Crews said a small fire broke out in a mixing vat on the mezzanine level of the building. The mixing operation was part of a powder coating process, officials said.

One person was taken from the building by helicopter to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

The fire took roughly 30 minutes to put out and the building’s structure wasn’t damaged, officials said.

The business was open at the time of the fire and employees were evacuated.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials said it is not considered suspicious.

The company manufactures powder coatings. According to the company's website, powder coating is considered a sustainable alternative to paint technology.
