Woman Drives Over, Kills Sister In Apparent Accident, Police Say

Woman Struck by Curb-Jumping Car While Standing on Sidewalk

A woman starting her car and attempting to shift gift without removing a theft-deterring device lost control of the vehicle and jumped a curb Thursday night, driving over and killing her sister who was standing on the sidewalk, police said.

Martha McNeal, 67, of the 5400 block of West Ferdinand Street, was killed in front of her home, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.

She reportedly became pinned beneath the vehicle and dragged more than 15 feet.

Officials said McNeal was on the sidewalk when her sister started her car and attempted to shift gears, without removing The Club device from her steering wheel. The woman then lost control of the car, causing it to go over the curb and strike McNeal.

McNeal was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where she was pronounced dead at 8 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

Police said the incident was not a hit-and-run, and confirmed that the vehicle did drive over the curb and strike the 67-year-old woman.

An autopsy for McNeal was slated for Friday.
