Woman Left Infant in Hot Car While Drinking Inside Home: Report

A woman was charged with neglect after authorities say she left her infant daughter in a hot vehicle while she drank alcohol inside her northwest Indiana home, according to a report.

The Northwest Indiana Times reported that authorities said at around 5:49 p.m. on June 15, an officer responded to a report of a disturbance at a home in the 4800 block of Wegg Avenue in East Chicago.

The father of a two-month-old girl told the responding officer that the baby's mother, 34-year-old Alejandra Feliciano, had left her in a van outside while Feliciano drank in the home's basement, according to the newspaper.

The child's father said he noticed she was missing after he returned from his older daughter's gymnastics practice, and when he asked Feliciano where she was, she said she did not know, the Times said court records revealed.

He found the child in the van, sitting in her car seat sweating and with a red face, and called 911, according to the paper. The baby was taken to St. Catherine Hospital where she was treated and released.

The police officer who responded to the scene noted that it was 90 degrees outside, and said he found Feliciano asleep in the basement next to a bottle of wine, according to the Times.

She admitted to the officer that she had been drinking all day and drove to the liquor store with her child at around 5 p.m., forgetting the baby in the car when she returned home, the paper reported.

Feliciano was charged Thursday was felony neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury, according to the Times.
