Woman Killed in Apartment Fire on Chicago's South Side

A woman died in a fire Wednesday night in the South Shore neighborhood.

Firefighters responded to a fire on the third floor of an apartment building about 7:45 p.m. in the 7600 block of South Essex Avenue, according to Chicago Police.

After the fire was put out, a 57-year-old woman was found unresponsive and pronounced dead, according to police and the Chicago Fire Department.

Smoke detectors in the building were working properly, the department said.

Firefighters found oxygen equipment in the home and suspected that it may have caused the fire, department spokesman Larry Merritt said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but does not appear to be suspicious, said Merritt.

No further information was immediately available.
