Woman Killed, Man Wounded in Shooting on Chicago's North Side

The alderman said in a statement that the victims were "bystanders" in this "senseless act"

A woman was killed and a man injured in a shooting on Chicago's North Side Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

The shooting occurred just before 3:30 p.m. in the 4500 block of N Sheridan Rd in the city's Uptown neighborhood, authorities confirmed.

The 57-year-old woman and 58-year-old man were walking on the sidewalk when a car approached and someone inside opened fire, officials said. The victims were taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead, according to police. The man was listed in good condition, officials said.

A statement from 46th Ward Alderman James Cappleman described the victims as "bystanders" and said the police have described the shooting as gang-related.

"Video footage from a police camera (placed there last year) will be reviewed to capture the person responsible for this senseless act," Cappleman said.

No one is in custody and authorities continue to investigate.
