Woman Killed in Fire at Pilsen Home

A woman was killed and a firefighter injured in a massive blaze at a home in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood early Monday, authorities said.

The fire took place at around 1:45 a.m. in the 1800 block of South Peoria Street on the city's Lower West Side, according to Chicago police and fire officials.

Firefighters arrived to find a woman at the top of the stairs on the second floor of a two-flat, Fire Chief John Van Dorpe said.

She was taken to Stroger Hospital where she later died, fire officials said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality. Authorities said she was 48 years old, but further details, including her identity, were not available.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury when his hand was punctured by a nail, officials said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

No other injuries were reported in the fire, which rendered the entire building uninhabitable, authorities said.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
