Woman Dies During Aurora Accident

Police believe a woman who died during an accident in suburban Aurora Monday morning abruptly exited from a vehicle before she was hit by another car.

Karla R. Benavides, 22, was run over on Orchard Rd. between Galena Blvd. and Illinois Ave. at approximately 2:15 a.m., according to a release from Aurora police.

Benavides, of Geneva, was reportedly laying in the roadway before she was struck by a 2015 Subaru traveling southbound, authorities said.

Preliminary information suggests that Benavides abruptly exited from a friend’s black Chevy Equinox prior to the crash, according to police, who said it was not clear if she died from the Subaru or had been killed in an earlier fall from the Equinox.

Investigators are still trying to determine both the reason for her exit from the car, as well as if there were any other prior collisions.

The Subaru driver, a 26-year-old Oswego resident, pulled over immediately and remained on the scene until officers arrived, according to police.

That driver was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Aurora police said.

Benavides was taken to the Kane County Coroner’s office and an autopsy is scheduled to be performed, authorities said. A GoFundMe account was started Monday afternoon to help her family pay for funeral expenses.

Police are working to locate potential witnesses to the incident or the victim’s activity prior to the accident.

Further details were not immediately available, as the Aurora Police Department’s Traffic Division continues to investigate.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact Aurora police at 630-256-5330 or Crime Stoppers at 630-892-1000.
