Woman Files Lawsuit After Parents Killed in I-290 Crash

A woman filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the driver who rear-ended the vehicle carrying her and her parents last month on I-290 near west suburban Elmhurst, leaving both her parents dead.

Colleen Muff filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court against the driver and his employer, Motorcar Solutions.

On July 16, the man was driving a 2008 Acura east on I-290 near Route 64 when he crashed into the rear of Muff’s 2013 Nissan, which then struck the back of a semi truck, according to the lawsuit.

Muff’s parents, 82-year-old Robert Fridlund and 77-year-old Norine Fridlund, were killed in the crash, while Muff was injured.

“If the driver had been paying attention and obeying the traffic laws, this family would be together today,” Muff’s attorney, Timothy Cavanagh, said in a statement. “They were heading to a family graduation party at the time. A happy event turned into a horrible tragedy because of the driver’s negligence.”

The one-count suit claims the other driver failed to maintain control of his vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid colliding with another vehicle, was speeding and failed to maintain a proper lookout. It seeks an unspecified amount in damages.

Motorcar Solutions did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on the lawsuit Wednesday.
