Girl, 16, Fatally Shot Outside Dolton Convenience Store

A 16-year-old girl was shot and killed Tuesday night outside a convenience store in south suburban Dolton, authorities say.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified her as Akeira Foster, of the 3000 block of West 77th Street in Chicago.

“Distraught…just broken up…mad,” that's how Darryl Smith, the teen's stepfather says he feels about the devastating situation.

Foster was standing outside the Moonlight Food Deli and Liquor store, 1203 E. 142nd Street, at around 9 p.m. when she was shot, Dolton Village Trustee Tiffany Henyard told a Sun-Times photographer. She was not believed to be the intended target of the shooting.

“She was a 16-year-old kid and (the) sweetest girl you want to meet…her life was just taken too soon," Smith said.

Dolton police did not return a request for comment.

Last week, 40-year-old Marshia Bowman was fatally shot while driving four of her children through Dolton. No one has been taken into custody yet.

“There's problems throughout Dolton," Dolton Trustee Tiffany Henyard said. Crime is high, it's ridiculous, we need to do something about it, enough is enough I’m sick of it,” she said.
