Woman Dies After Jumping From Burning Building on Chicago’s North Side

A woman died after jumping from a burning building on Chicago's North Side early Tuesday, officials said.

The 51-year-old woman jumped from the front window on the third floor of a building in the 1700 block of West Touhy Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood, officials said.

A two-alarm fire broke out at the mid-rise apartment building at around 5:30 a.m., according to fire officials.

It was first reported on the rear porches facing Touhy, according to fire officials, but quickly spread to the interior of the building before being struck out around 7:15 a.m.

The woman who jumped was taken in critical condition to St. Francis Hospital, where she later died, authorities said.

Further details, including her identity, were not immediately available.

Another woman, thought to be middle-aged, was taken to an Weiss Memorial Hospital after suffering smoke inhalation, according to fire officials. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
