A woman died after she was struck while pushing a car on the street in northwest suburban Streamwood Monday night, according to police.
At around 7:37 p.m., first responders were called to an area just east of the intersection of East Lake Street and South Park Avenue for a crash, Streamwood police said in a statement.
Authorities said 29-year-old Aries Cobian, of Glendale Heights, was one of two pedestrians pushing a 1994 Oldsmobile sedan eastbound on Lake Street when it was struck from behind by a Toyota pickup truck.
According to family friend Kanaesha Wilson said moments before she died, Cobian had called her for help.
“She called me, she’s like ‘my car stopped, it’s…it’s not working,’” Wilson recounts. “I’m like ‘do you need a jumper or anything?’ she’s like ‘no, like it just went out, like I need you to like help me push it.”
Wilson says Cobian and her cousin got out and started pushing the stalled car, while another cousin stirred it.
Shortly thereafter, a pick-up truck that police say had been heading in the same direction, slammed into the back of Cobian’s car.
The 12-week pregnant mother was then taken to St. Alexius Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, according to police.
“The hardest part is her kids, them growing up not having their mother,” Wilson said.
Cobian had four children, the oldest being a 9-year-old daughter and the youngest just 6 months old.
Streamwood officials say the accident remains under investigation, though they have confirmed someone is in custody in connection to the incident. Police also said as of Tuesday evening, no charges have been filed.
