Woman Charged With Attempted Murder of Police Officer Shot at Humboldt Park: Police

Emily Petronella, 19, was arrested Saturday and charged Sunday

A woman has been charged with attempt murder of a Chicago police officer who was shot Saturday night while responding to a call in the city's Humboldt Park neighborhood, authorities say.

Emily Petronella, 19, was arrested Saturday and charged Sunday with felony counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault of a peace officer with a weapon, armed violence, aggravated discharge of a firearm and manufacture and delivery of over 5,000 grams of cannabis, according to Chicago police. She was also charged with a misdemeanor for a bail bond violation.

"The offender knowingly and intentionally discharged a firearm through a door striking a police officer and placed other officers on scene in fear of receiving a battery," police said.

In addition, officials said "during the search of the residence, officers recovered a large amount of cannabis, a semi-automatic pistol and large bundles of United States Currency."

According to CPD spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, Petronella was to face a court hearing Sunday morning, and officials later said she was ordered held without bail.

Her next court date was set for Monday at noon.

The shooting occurred just after 7 p.m. in the 2700 block of West Potomac, according to Chicago police.

According to police, the officer was shot in the left shoulder and was transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable, condition.

"He's in good spirits," Superintendent Eddie Johnson said. "Talking a lot; He just wants the ordeal to be over with."

Authorities say the officer is expected to survive.

Johnson revealed that the officer is 34 years old, and that he has been on the force for four and a half years. He also served in the Marine Corps for eight years, according to the superintendent.

A police spokesman said that several people of interest were in custody for questioning, and that a gun was recovered from the scene. A woman, who police believe shot the officer, is in custody.

The woman is known to police, according to Superintendent Johnson, and the department has had several encounters with her.

Officers were attempting to breach the rear door of a residence to execute the search warrant when the woman allegedly fired a shot through the door, striking the officer in the shoulder.

No shots were fired by police officers during the exchange.
