A woman's body was found in a North Side Uptown neighborhood garage Thursday morning in what a police sergeant said was "obviously a homicide."
Firefighters were called to a garage on fire in the 5000 block of North Clark Street shortly before 10 a.m. and found the woman dead inside, said fire department spokesman Richard Rosado.
Inside, the woman was found with burns on her legs and torso. It appeared someone had thrown charcoals at her to start the fire in an attempt to cover up the slaying, a police Bomb & Arson Section sergeant said.
Nothing else inside the garage was burning.
"It' obviously a homicide," said the sergeant.
There were no vehicles inside the garage, only a food cart of the type used by neighborhood merchants.
The victim, a woman believed to be in her 50s, has not yet been publicly identified.
No arrests had been made as of early Thursday afternoon, and the sergeant did not know if the victim lived at the Clark Street address.
Belmont Area detectives are also investigating.
