Woman, 76, Shot While Driving Car

Shooting happened at about 7 p.m. near West 40th Street and South Artesian Avenue

A 76-year-old woman was shot Wednesday evening in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder shortly after 7 p.m. near West 40th Street and South Artesian Avenue, said News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.

"Six bullets. As soon as it happened I just grabbed everyone and pushed them inside," said a teen who was playing soccer with his cousins nearby.

The woman didn't realize at first she had been shot until she was at a stop sign and felt a pain a few blocks away at Garfield Boulevard and Western Avenue, police said. That's where emergency crews picked her up and transferred her to a local hospital in critical condition.

Area Central detectives were investigating.
